The sands of time…

Along my slice of paradise, we enjoy shore sharing part of the worlds largest collection of fresh water sand dunes. 17 miles of sandy beach is the NYS part of the collection, unique only along a great lakes shoreline where the whole of the collection is kept. The sand is fine like sweet sugar, soft underfoot…a treat to the feet where it kisses the fresh water. The ways of the wind and the water shape sand castles that only mother nature can create.

My view includes the dunes which has been ever changing as she has twisted and shaped their silhouette with wind, water, and ice over time. Beating them down slowly and then rebuilding, almost taking away and then giving back the gift in a different wrapper…
a great lake indeed.

Shifting sands change the access from our safe haven inlet, shifting from north to south depending on the year, cutting through the dunes altering safe passage to the greatness of the lake.

On a windy day when lake sings loud with its power the undertow and waves can not be under estimated. The channel has taken more than a few lives over the years with a force any ocean could muster for those unaware of the push and pull dangers of fresh water.

As we continue to play along the shoreline, we fight nature’s sands of time which limits the depths of our way…moving sand to keep her at bay long enough, so we can pass for the summer.

A phenomenon of late is a new playground, one which exists smack in the middle of change and our body of water. Sand on the move from the power of the lake, a sand bar…now just several inches under water has risen from the deep like an Atlantis sand castle for our pleasure.

A new place for exploration and fun in the sun. The drop offs are unannounced as several dogs and kids discover as they run across the bar.

Blind to a distant eye, it appears as though we can walk on water like magic…

Links along the lake…

If golf is one of your passions you pursue along the shore, there is usually plenty of venues to chose from. Famous courses line the shore wherever the water meets the grass. Some rest on islands, while others just nestle along the edge, but all provide views, famous or not, that inland play just can’t compete with.

Unique hazards from shoreline winds and water to the friends that are common along the edge are all part of waterfront play. Before you putt, some of what might need to be cleared for a clean shot to the hole, might involve a pooper scooper…hazards from our friends watching… 🙂

after putting you may still need it, perhaps hazards from our friends playing…?

Purple haze…

Although it is rumoured that jimi was inspired along the shores of Morocco to write Castles in the Sand, the rock and roll flavor and view for today along the shore was feeling more like a purple haze…

lately things just don’t seem the same…

Scuse me while I kiss the sky…

Rainy Monday…

image

Whenever it rains at the lake on a Monday, it at least makes it a little easier to leave, for those of us that do, even if only for the day.   Although the sky was gray and small droplets flicked across the front of the lens, I had to stop, as I was struck, not for the first time, but once again, by the view across the docks and the burst of natural color the water front randomly decides to place for me to enjoy.

Iris pseudacorus, yellow iris, partial to waterfront conditions not only stands as a flag of beauty (another common name, yellow flag), but also has the ability to absorb heavy metals into its rhizomes, caring for its waterfront slice of paradise.   Considered invasive in some circles, I can’t help but think, as we each have our place on the shore, generally at a random twist of fate, that there is beauty in each selection that was made.  Enjoy your view and a piece of mine on a rainy day…yellow iris on the lake …usny.image

Viking in the clouds…

image

When a Viking appeared in the clouds at sunset, it occurred to me, maybe he was looking down, reminiscent for the waterfront experience…the motivation for setting sail, one of  exploration.  Motivation, similar to perhaps our own when heading out on to the water.

As legend has it, they made their way to North America sometime circa 700-1100 AD,  navigating by the sun and the stars.  When clouds obscured the view a device, a Sun Stone (cool), was used.

For the “polarization of the skylight”, a crystal, was held to the sky as a window to the way on the water.

The lens, the “skylight” of the day captures, the Viking in the clouds…part of the ever-changing view…and spark for imagination…luvin life on the lake…usny.
